Ten days ago I had no idea any of this existed. I had never owned a 3DS, and I hadn't hacked a console since I softmodded my wii almost a decade ago. In the last week and a half, I did a hell of a lot of searching and reading to get up to speed. I acquired a N3DSXL, installed CFW, and am thoroughly enjoying my new shacking lifestyle.
There is a plethora of information here, but as someone who very recently walked into it completely blind, I can say that it is not particularly beginner-friendly. The FAQ didn't answer several of my biggest questions, and the guides all presume a level of prior knowledge that I didn't have. I did eventually find everything I needed to know, but it took some doing (and asking in the sticky).
To make things easier for the next guy, I have written this guide from the prospective of a complete novice. I tried to answer all the burning questions that a total noob would have, and to do so without complicated technical terms. So without further ado..
What is this?
Modifying the firmware on a Nintendo 2DS / 3DS / New 3DS handheld console to let it do things that Nintendo doesn't allow (for one reason or another).
What can I do with a hacked 3DS that I can't do now?
Lots of stuff. For example:
- Back up your 3DS carts and save files
- Play backups (ROMs) of 3DS carts and eshop games from an SD card
- Play 3DS games from other regions
- Mod 3DS games with things like
- Fan Translations
- Forza 2 pc download. Gameplay mods
- Graphics mods
- Cheats
- Hacked save files
- Use Virtual Console injectors to emulate older consoles (more info below)
- Run homebrew games and applications, including emulators for systems not covered by VC
- Change the way your 3DS looks with themes and badge/icon packs
- Take screenshots & livestream gameplay video (N3DS only)
It's complicated, but if you can read and follow instructions, it's not hard.
Is it dangerous?
Nothing is without risk. If you follow the instructions carefully, there is very little risk. But if you do something wrong, or even if you don't and just get really unlucky, there is a chance you can permanently brick your device. If this is unacceptable, just bail out now. If you're brave, read on.
Will I lose the games I've already bought? What about my game saves?
No. If the hacking procedure is completed successfully, you will lose nothing.
Assuming you already have a 3DS with the appropriate firmware and a microSD card, it's free! All it costs is some time to read and follow the directions.
I don't have a 3DS. Where do I get one that can be hacked?
You can take your chances with buying a new one, but there is no absolutely guarenteed way to get one with an appropriate firmware version. Your best bet would be to buy one used and have the current owner confirm the FW version on the device. I bought mine on /r/GameSale
The bigger the better! Technically a 4GB card is large enough, but you might have to move things on and off a couple times during the hacking process. At least an 8GB card is recommended, and they're so cheap (like $6) that it would be silly to go with anything smaller. The 3DS will read any microSD up to and including 128GB with one small caveat: it must be formatted with FAT32. Windows will not format any card above 32GB with FAT32 on its own, so you will need to use a 3rd party program to do it. I use MiniTool, which works and is free.
What do you mean 'appropriate firmware'? Will this work on my 2DS/3DS or not?
The latest firmware is currently unhackable. Go to the System Settings and look for the version number in the bottom right corner of the upper screen. If you have version 11.3.0-36 or lower, your device can be hacked. If you have 11.4 or higher, it cannot.
No. Unfortunately, at this time you are completely hosed if you have 11.4 or higher. There is currently no indication this may change in the future.
I have 11.3 or lower! What now?
Go to https://3ds.guide and follow the instructions. Actually, read through the instructions completely before you follow them. Yes, there are a lot of steps. I know a lot of it looks like word salad and you might not understand what you're acomplishing. But the instructions are very specific, and if you follow them exactly, it should work. Just take your time and don't skip anything.
That's like a thousand steps! Is there no easier way?
Not if you want all the functionality that a custom firmware provides. If you only want homebrew, then something like soundhax will get you there (if you're on an appropriate firmware). You will have to re-apply the exploit (which consists of playing a specially corrupted sound file on the 3DS's music player) every time you want to open the homebrew launcher. If you just want to play 3DS 'backups', then you can shell out about $100 for a flashcart. But I promise you a full custom firmware installation is worth the effort.
The guide links to troubleshooting procedures for most potential errors. If you really get stuck, you can always ask on /r/3dshacks
It worked! Where do I get all these 'backups'?
That information is not technically allowed in this sub. There are other subs that discuss 3DS piracy.
Can I play these backups online, or is Nintendo going to send goons after me?
For the most part, you can play online without fear of being banned. There are only two exceptions:
- Do not play modded/hacked games online (including hacked saves)
- Do not play unreleased games online
The current theory is that Nintendo can't even tell whether or not your device has been hacked, but they can tell if you're playing a hacked ROM/save or if you're playing a game before it has gone on sale. Avoid those things and you should be fine (for now).
For many systems, you want to use a VC injector. This tricks the 3DS into thinking your ROM is actually a legally purchased virtual console game, and uses Nintendo's own (excellent) built-in emulators. For systems that Nintendo doesn't emulate, search /r/3dshacks or gbatemp forums. Please bear in mind that the 3DS is not a very powerful device, and virtually nothing after the 16bit era will be emulated well (if at all).
Hack 3ds Xl With Sd Card
What about DS games?
There is a method for loading DS ROMs from the SD card, but it is unreliable and compatibility is very poor. That method is relatively new and may get better, but at this time the only good way to play DS games is with a DS flashcart. Luckily they're cheap. You can get one for less than $20 at any number of sketchy online shops.
So now that my device is hacked, can I update to the latest firmware?
At the moment, you can, but you probably shouldn't. The eshop and several other online features require you to be on the latest firmware. If you're on 11.3 or lower, you can use a homebrew exploit called CTR-HTTPWN to trick your 3DS into thinking it's on the latest, even though it isn't. Unfortunately, 11.4 'fixed' the vulnerability that allowed this. If 11.5 comes out and breaks things, you will be stuck choosing between sticking with 11.4 and losing online functionality, or updating and losing whatever 11.5 breaks. If you stay on 11.3 or lower, you should be able to continue tricking Nintendo into thinking you're on the latest with CTR-HTTPWN.
What about updating Luma3DS and all the other hack stuff?
That is going to depend on a lot of variables. Personally, I try to stick with a 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' policy. If it is broke, then you should start looking for a fix in /r/3dshacks
If you've read this far, you're ready to start looking for answers yourself. Start with the 3dshacks common resources and FAQ. Maybe skim the glossary of 3DS hacking terms to make sense of the gibberish acronyms. Search the /r/3dshacks wiki and the sub itself - Pretty much every question you could possibly have has been answered many times over. If you really can't find an answer, you should ask in the weekly General Q&A sticky at the top of the sub. That is the only place where there are no stupid questions.
